Welcome to the 2017 Wolverine Tennis season!!!  We are excited to have you participate with our team.  I hope you bring an open mind and a willing body.  Here are a few things to get you started for the season.

We are a no cut team.  It is hoped that you get just as much out of a practice as you do in a match.  I encourage everyone to try out for the varsity team, even if you are a freshman!  We will have varsity tryouts the first week of the season for the girls, so if you are interested in varsity, plan on staying later than 10:00.  If you make the varsity team, please read the schedule over carefully.  Our season is short (two months)  and we try to pack as much tennis in as we can in a short amount of time. It is expected if you are on Varsity or JV that you will commit to the schedule for the season.   We do have varsity tournaments/matches on some weekends and there will be at least one or two days that you could be out of school for varsity tournaments.

Challenges at the varsity level-  We like to foster competition amongst ourselves.  We are a team, but at the varsity level, we need to put the best players at each flight.  Girls will be allowed to challenge at 1,2 and 3 singles and 1 and 2 doubles through the first three matches of the regular conference season.  Tournaments after these conference matches are coaches discretion.  Ultimately, Coach and I will make the final determination as to where players are placed and what positions they play, singles or doubles.  Players will be consulted and give input, but the final decision remains with the coaches.

Concerns-  if you have a concern with one or both of the coaches, any of the players or other matters related to the tennis team, please direct those question to Coach Bowhousen or myself.

What do you need in order to play tennis at West High School.

Before the first day of practice (August 8) you will need to submit the following items to Mrs. Abraham (our activities director’s secretary, located in the main office).  When you have the following completed, you will be issued a blue card, you will not be able to start practice until this blue card is given to me.

-You must either have a physical card or alternate year physical card card filled out and signed (parent, Dr. and you).  You may see your regular Dr or Walgreens offers walk-in service.

-There is a 150.00 participation fee.  This fee is for the year regardless of how many sports you participate in.

-Athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA and have no more than one “F” per quarter.  Freshmen come in with a clean slate.

Uniform requirements.  Uniforms are purchased by the athletes.  The only requirement is for each athlete to purchase a t-shirt.  The team members decide on other articles of clothing and purchasing these items are optional.  If you are considering varsity and make it, you will purchase a uniform.

-Equipment.  Each athlete will be required to provide their own racquet, shoes and water jug.  Please be sure to bring water to each practice and match.  Our season tends to be a little warm and water is essential.

It will help you tremendously if you are involved in a tennis program over the summer either at a club or a program such as the Waukesha Tennis association’s drill program at Heyer Park.  You can access the Heyer Park information at waukeshatennis.org.  It is open to both boys and girls.

Please note that this schedule may not yet be complete, the potential to add tournaments always exists.

Welcome to West!!
